Description:
The very first production in the playhouse was “The Pied Piper of Hamlin,” which was a hit with the children of the town. The first adult performance at the playhouse was “Skidding” in 1932, followed by another adult production, “Pigs.”
Since that time, the Gainesville Community Playhouse has been renovated and regularly updated, thanks for its many generous patrons. It now produces five to six plays or musicals each year. The 2019 season at the playhouse includes such popular plays and musicals as “Beauty and the Beast,” “Grease,” “Oliver,” “The Odd Couple” and “The Producers.”
The mission statement of members of the Gainesville Community Playhouse is to offer an accessible live theater experience for the local community and people from the surrounding areas. They invite anyone interested in volunteering in the playhouse to join their ranks or audition for stage productions.
Gainesville Community Playhouse also has a vision of continuing to provide high quality, live theater in a warm, professional and welcoming environment, while also celebrating the diversity of the local community.
Gainesville Community Playhouse Reviews
Gainesville Community Playhouse is well known for staging quality plays and musicals, including “Mary Poppins,” “The Wizard of Oz” and “Mamma Mia.” The sets are renowned as being excellent, depicting their subject well and choreography of the several dance performances is known to be professional. The actors in each production have been praised highly for their professional and enjoyable performances. What makes things even better is that the ticket prices are reasonable.
Other reviews speak of the great local talent involved in the productions, as well as genuinely friendly and helpful volunteer staff that work at the Gainesville Community Playhouse. Many local residents purchase season tickets at the beginning of the theater season, which allows them to pick and choose those stage performances they wish to see.
One recent show staged at the playhouse is “The Producers,” which was rated as being funny and well-timed and with talented actors doing a local take on the classic stage piece.
Besides the many excellent productions staged at the volunteer community theater, the building housing the performances is modern and spacious enough to accommodate large audiences, and with a spacious enough stage to handle any stage or musical productions. Reportedly there is a large backstage area to comfortably handle any prompt and efficient scenery changes during the performances.
Some popular musicals, such as “Mamma Mia” with its iconic ABBA music, see producers purchasing the musical rights for the show. However, there is also an orchestra pit in the playhouse to provide live music for musical performances.
Make a point to visit this excellent playhouse and enjoy a play or musical soon!
